What shaft flex should you play? (Swing speed is only half of it)
Speed gets you in the ballpark. Tempo, transition and where you release decide the rest.
Everyone knows the chart: under 85 mph play regular, 85–95 stiff, 95-plus X. It's not wrong. It's just not enough.
The chart
Driver swing speed as a starting point: under 75 mph — senior/A flex. 75–85 — regular. 85–95 — stiff. 95–105 — stiff or X depending on tempo. Over 105 — X.
Why it's not enough
Two players at 92 mph can need different shafts. One has a smooth, long backswing and an easy transition — regular might be perfect. The other is quick from the top and holds the angle late — stiff, maybe a heavier stiff, so the shaft doesn't unload early and send it left.
Flex also isn't standardized. A Ventus Blue 6S plays stiffer than a stock "S" in a lot of OEM shafts. That's why we fit with actual shafts, not a chart.
Signs you're wrong
Too soft: ball starts left (for righties) and goes higher than you want, feels "whippy," you hook it when you swing hard. Too stiff: ball starts right, launches low, feels boardy, you lose distance when you're tired.
What to do
Book a driver fitting, or come hit five shafts in the sim for $30 and we'll tell you honestly. Either way you'll leave knowing your number.
